In Matthew 6 Jesus is teaching us how to relate to the world. As believers, we live in the world but we are not to be worldly minded. If we are not careful we will spend the great majority of time thinking about worldly things like like finances, food, and fashions. Every logical human being knows that we are not going to be here any length of time and yet we spend our time amassing wealth that we cannot keep. I like what David said in Psalm 39, You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.” We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. The rich worry about keeping their wealth and the poor worry about their lack of wealth. The rich worry as do the poor, only from a different angle. So according to Jesus, one of the chief characteristics of a worldly person is anxiety.

Jesus said, I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?  Life is more than food and the body more than closes. Think of it like this—Life is a greater gift than food and the body is a greater gift than clothes. The same God who gave us the greater gifts will also give the lesser. God is the source of every good gift and life is a gift. If He takes care of the birds; He will take care of you. Have you ever seen an anxious bird? Some people do have birds for pets, have you ever heard of a bird on anxiety meds? They are God’s creatures and He cares for them. Don’t misunderstand; birds don’t worry but they are very active. Have you ever seen a lazy bird? No, they stay busy and most of their activity is searching for food or shelter, but they don’t worry. So remember this: {courteously of Martyn Lloyd Jones}

  • Anxiety is a human problem: everyone worries about something.
  • God gave us life: it is a gift.
  • We are here because it is His will.
  • God is concerned about each and every one that He created.
  • He takes care of the birds and you are more valuable to Him than a bird!
  • Our Creator determines our worth.
  • Jesus died for us, so what does that make us worth?
  • Faith is the victory that overcomes the world and anxiety.
