Aching For Control

Scripture

There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

~Proverbs 14:12

Quote

Humans ache to rule the cosmos. The ache to be God and acting as if we are is what sin is all about.

~Scot McKnight

Although history documents man’s ways as being flawed, we still want to be in control. Deep down in every person heart is a desire to call the shots. This is the very reason repentance is a struggle for an adult, we do not want to surrender control and Jesus demands control. There is a little bit of Satan in each of us, we want to crave out our own destiny. We are not ready to fully trust God, after all, what if He doesn’t have our best interest at heart? How do we know that He really loves us? How can we really be sure that He cares about our problems? This the very song and dance Satan used with Eve–“Does God really love you? Why is He withholding from you if He loves you? What He is really doing is ‘keeping you in the dark.'” God’s goal is not to keep us ignorant but to teach us to depend on Him. Satan convinced Eve that her way was better than God’s. Adam and Eve swallowed the “My way is better lie,” hook, cork, sinker and all. They ate the fruit and brought the entire human race under the curse of sin.

As soon as they ate the fruit, they began making their own choices and the first was to get some distance between themselves and God so they went and hid in trees. There is huge problem with this humanistic philosophy where man calls the shots: humans tend to make bad choices. Part of the problem is our lack of foreknowledge which is something God has and we do not. He sees the future, the big picture and we do not. Another reason we make bad choices is that we are selfish by nature. The Prodigal thought about no one other than himself. His decision to leave the father was purely selfish. He thought he could be the master of his own fate but he learned otherwise. He had the romantic idea that sin would carry him to pleasure and prosperity. In reality, sin carried him away from his father and down in a pig sty. He got caught in the vortex of sin and it carried him further than he wanted to go, kept him longer than he intended to stay and cost him more than he wanted to pay. Sin always carries us away from God and down into a deeper depravity. Unless we repent, it will carry us to hell. The “My Way Bus” is headed for hell.
