Alcohol Is A Killer

Don’t gaze at the wine, seeing how red it is,
    how it sparkles in the cup, how smoothly it goes down.
For in the end it bites like a poisonous snake;
    it stings like a viper.

~Proverbs 23:31-32, NLT

I don’t need a verse in the bible that tells me it is a sin to drink; all I need is to observe the crowd that drinks.

My Thoughts

I admit that I have been entertained by a drunken scene in the old movie Rooster Cockburn, but that is a movie and acting. Every drunk I have seen in real life is pathetic. Alcohol has the power to transform a decent man into a jackass. Of course not all drinkers are alcoholics and not all alcoholics are drunks. Alcohol is the sacred cow here in America. The U.S. alcohol industry generates a massive economic impact, with the total market valued at over $530 billion as of 2023 and consumer spending on alcohol reaching roughly $228 billion in 2024. The industry contributes $70 billion in annual federal, state, and local tax revenue, but this is a misleading fact because it cost taxpayers $250 billion to clean up the mess that alcohol leaves behind. This is a guess-ament because alcohol related deaths are not always reported but some 178,000 die annually because of alcohol and most of these are innocent people killed by drunken drivers. You will have to dig to get the ugly facts about alcohol. You will not hear the truth in the class room or on the TV. They do not want you to know the truth.

Alcohol is a drug. If you drink alcohol, you use drugs. It is the number one drunk problem in America and has been for the last century. Like salt, Alcohol is a poison. Salt is a poison that doesn’t harm when used moderately, but too much salt will kill. If drunks did not pass out, they would drink themselves to death. Alcohol is a depressant and who wants to be depressed. Alcohol is a demon. At a certain point, the alcohol takes control, the mind is numbed and neutralized which opens the door to demonic spirits. Alcohol doesn’t transform us into angels, it makes us devils. I hired on for a man once who put me working with a murderer and he told me up front: “You will be working with a man who is a convicted murderer.” Of course I was uneasy and very hesitant. He said, “Relax, he is harmless unless he is drinking. He got drunk and killed his own brother, but he is as gentle as a lamb when sober.”

You remember the story of Jack the Ripper which remains one of the world’s unsolved mysteries. No positive identification was ever made of Jack. He murdered women, carved them up in little pieces and all five were suspected prostitutes and inebriated. Nothing good comes from the use of Alcohol. You may be able to drink in moderation but will your children be able? They say one out of six has the alcoholic gene. Adrian Rogers said, “If I had a dog that bit one out of six grand children, I would get rid of the dog.”

Have a great day and thanks for reading the blog.
