Daily Disciplines

Therefore, as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.

~Colossians 2:6, NASB

“The Christian life is not lived by occasional leaps of faith, but by daily walk of obedience.”

~Ya’akov

I am a hopeless sequential learner. I have a strong tendency to make list. When I found out a few weeks ago that one of my distant relatives, Lewis Bayly, {spelled differently but pronounced the same} had written a book of list, I had to have one. It was tough sledding at first: Bayly is harder to read than C.S. Lewis due mostly to the fact that he lived in the 17th century and the English language has changed dramatically in 400 years. I call this first list, RULES FOR WALKING DAILY WITH CHRIST.

  1. Stop sin in its infant stage {Temptation}. Do not flirt with temptation. Dismiss it promptly. Crush the serpent while it is in the egg stage.
  2. Don’t waste time with vain thoughts.
  3. Learn to deny yourself.
  4. Remember how much you need Christ.
  5. Repent quickly. Avoid rebellion at all cost.
  6. Don’t live to please people and learn to be content with what you have.
  7. Don’t be consumed with earthly things.
  8. Don’t get proud when you are successful or when people praise you.
  9. Never treat sin as a small matter.
  10. Remember life is short, so don’t waste time.

Abbrivated Version

  1. Kill sin early
  2. Guard your thoughts
  3. Deny yourself
  4. Rely on Christ
  5. Repent Quickly
  6. Be content
  7. Think eternity {like Jacob, unlike Esau}
  8. Be Humble
  9. Take sin seriously
  10. Make everyday count

I like the abbreviated list. I think I struggle most with two and three. Not bragging by any means; just confessing. I don’t make list just to make list. This list is disciplines we should practice daily. I don’t think it is a bad list. I have studied this one several times now and I want to encarnate it.

“My flesh and my heart may fail,
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

—Psalm 73:26

  • I thank the LORD for another sweet and wonderful day of worship/rest. God is good!
  • I want to thank Mrs. Terri and the children for the HAPPY ANNIVERSARY CARDS. I should have done it before the benediction yesterday morning but I forgot. Our 55th wedding anniversary is coming up Thursday so on the way home from the Point, June told me what she wanted for our anniversary. It was not to collect my life insurance. She wants to go on a cruise. I know a lot of you think I am cheap and a sorry husband but I told her immediately, “If that is what you want, that is what we will do.” We are going to take her little Buick and CRUISE over to Hillsboro, Alabama and eat at the famous DOT’S. Ruth Crisp eat your heart out: you can’t touch DOT’S.
  • It felt like fall this morning early [65*}. Fall is just around the corner. Once Labor Day gets here—its zoom…where did 2026 go? Time flies when you are seventy-seven.
  • Don’t forget someone out there needs you to intercede for them today.
  • Outdoor Church Sunday September 6 @ 8:00. We are holding to the 8:00 am due to the heat
  • GOD’S WORD FOR ALL PEOPLE is Sunday September 13th. I am challenging every member to give $35 to translate a scripture verse so that people who have never had a bible in there language will have one. Our goal is to do the book of JAMES, 108 verses. I think we will give you two Sundays to get your $35, September 13 and 20. So far this year Wycliffe has translated 828,776 verses and we would like to tack on another 100. Wycliffe’s project could effect 2.1 billion people this year. Today there are 535 known people groups that have no scripture at all, not even John 3:16. Your gift of $35 will translate one entire verse. June and I are going to do a verse for ourselves and each of our children. Step up the the plate guys and let’s knock this one out of the park…108 verses for the POINT.
  • Slidder and Hotdog supper Wednesday night September 16. Originally had this for the 9th but we decided to use the pavilion and so maybe the weather will be cooler by the 16th.
  • Monday October 26…we are hosting the pastor appreciation banquet at the POINT. Things are a little different this year. We will need a 49er type meal because this is also the annual meeting of the executive committee. Instead of feeding 20, we will be feeding 60. We will get the KFC, drinks and rolls but we need your help with the other things. Instead of having the 49er meal on Oct. 23, we are asking the 49ers to help us with the meal on Monday October 26. You do not have to attend the meeting just bring your food at lunch time and stay for lunch. It will work if we have a servant’s heart!
  • October 28 is our Bill Smith Jambalaya Supper and our November Wednesday night meal falls on Veterans Day and we are having a stew and Joe is going to have us a video of our veterans at the round table. After the Stew in November, there will be no more Wednesday night suppers until Spring.

Have a great Monday and thanks for reading the blog!!!!
