He Knows Everything

Now we know that you know everything and don’t need anyone to question You.

~John 16:30, LCS

“The disciples reached the limits of their understanding; Christ never reached the limits of His knowledge.”

~Theo Pennington

In John 16 Jesus is preparing His disciples for His upcoming departure. Jesus is going back to the Father and He had to be excited about returning home. The disciples don’t undertand and yet they believe in Him and they believe that He came from the Father to do the Father’s will. Of course Jesus understood clearly that between the present and the departure, there would be a cross. He also knew that all of His disciples would be offended and frightened by His arrest and although they had just stated their faith in Him bu saying, “We know that You know everything and we believe You really came from God,” Jesus said to them—“Do you really believe? Understand this: the time is coming—and has already arrived— when you will be scattered, each of you to his own home and you will leave Me all alone.” He gives that a moment to sink in and then Jesus says, “I have told you these things {you will forsake Me] so that you may have peace.”

Jesus is a know-it-all in the true sense of the word. He knew what they had not even imagined. They would all yield to their frightful fleshy nature and all would forsake Him; all would deny Him; all would fail Him and yet His love for them was unabated. Here are some questions to ponder. Did the disciples intend to fail? Did they want to deny Jesus? Did they want to sleep through the prayer meeting in Gethsemane? In short, did they want to let Him down? You know the answer. They had no intention of failing and yet they failed and failed miserably. We talked about this in Bible Study Sunday morning. The people who take sin lightly and use grace as a license to sin are as lost as a goose in a hail storm. A part of the NEW BIRTH is a new nature, a divine nature and it doesn’t want to sin. True grace doesn’t say, “I can sin all I want”, true grace says, “I may sin, but I don’t want to.”

I don’t wake up in the morning thinking about what sin I can get into. I have no desire to sin. I hate sin and I despise my sin most of all and yet I invariably sin. This is why Jesus told them, “I have told you in advance that you were going to fail so that when you do, you will still have peace in knowing that I knew you would fail and I love you anyway.” I am not applauding our failure but I am telling you this: you can not be perfect and you will never have real peace until you admit that you are flawed and your only hope is the righteousness of Jesus. We fail, it is our nature: He did not fail, that was His nature. There will be no peace as long as you try to earn His favor…it cannot be earned.
