Hope For Breakfast

Scripture
I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease.
~Lamentations 3:20-22, NLT
Quote
“Hope is a good breakfast, but it is a bad supper.”
— Francis Bacon (1561–1626)

Sometimes these philosophers are hard to understand. This is what I think Bacon meant. When we wake up in the morning, we need hope. Hope is a good breakfast to motivate us and get us started: I hope today is a good day…I hope God gives me an opt to help someone…I hope He gives me strength and energy to work; to keep going, etc. Hope is our fuel for the day. Better still, hope is the starter that gets our engine going. Without hope, we are going nowhere. We can’t make it without hope but at the end of the day, we need more than hope. We need accomplishment. If all we did was sit at the table and hope, we have not accomplished anything. Last Friday at breakfast, I hoped it would not rain until I planted our peas. It did sprinkle but the rain did not come and I planted the peas. Hope was a motivational force but hope did not plant the peas. So when supper time arrives and all you have done is hoped, you are no better than when the day began. The farmer who only hopes has no harvest. The student that only hopes makes a poor grade on the exam. The Christian who only hopes never matures. Hope can inspire action but it cannot replace it. We begin with hope but we must arise from the table and put our hands to the plow.
Hope is wonderful—but obedience is better. Without hope we have no motivation to start but at the end of the day we need more than hope. That is probably what Bacon meant; when supper comes, hope is a poor meal. Every morning I need hope. Hope gets me out of bed. Hope reminds me that God’s mercies are new and fresh every morning, but when I lay down at night I want to feel some since of accomplishment. One or two more things I can check off of my to-do list. I want to know that I made a difference in someone’s life; helped someone or shared Christ with someone. I want to know that I have been obedient to my LORD and Savior.
I got to Bacon’s quote by accident or lets say providence. I was actually looking for an Earl Nightingale quote. I read Bacon’s quote but didn’t understand it. I had to get help and I’m glad help was available. One thing I hope for each and every day is to learn something new and I think that was accomplished. I hope I can remember what I learned.
