I Will Take The Scraps

Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.” She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”

You will never love Jesus with all your heart until you believe that He loves you! The greater your faith concering His love for you, the more you will love Him. The Syrophoenician woman is a perfect example of this marvelous truth. She had a problem and she was convinced that Jesus was the one who could help her. When she approached Him, she got little to no encouragement but her faith was not daunted. Although Jesus was silent for a while, she continued to plead with Him. Her persistent begging was getting on the disciples nerves and they wanted Jesus to send her away. Jesus did not send her away; He not only answered her prayer, He used the occasion to teach His disciples a valuable lesson. Jews had no use for Gentiles and this woman would be no more than a dog to them. Matter of fact, they often referred to Gentiles as dogs. In those days, dogs were known for their appetite, their inability to discern what is clean or unclean and their destructive nature. I think this woman understood Jesus better than His disciples and she was not offended in the least with Jesus choice of words…It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”

What I really like about the story is her attitude. “I understand LORD, I don’t deserve the bread, just give me some of the crumbs and I will be satisfied.” She not only had great faith, she had great humility. I don’t think it is a bad thing to share this woman’s attitude. I certainly don’t deserve to sit at the same table with Jesus; to sit beside Him or even near Him. To be in the same room is enough for me. I can live on the crumbs that fall from His table.

One other thing: as I read this story and the commentary by John Rogers; I was convicted of the smallest of my faith and the weakness of my love for Jesus and others. Jesus deserved to be loved supremely. If we do not love Him above all other things, He is not our God, our object of worship. He deserves to be loved supremely. His holiness, purity, perfection and sacrificial death at Calvary has earned Him the right to be loved more than any other thing in creation.

  • We got the word last night. Our grandson Ty is now one of the managers of the ALABAMA MEN’S BASKETBALL team. Congratulations Tybo! He had a lot of help. A special thanks to Tommy Kyle of Decatur. That is the good news: the bad news is we want see him much for the next 8 months.
  • Don’t forget someone out there needs you to intercede for them today and it may be your pastor.
  • Outdoor Church this Sunday September @ 8:00. We are sticking with the 8 O’clock start due to the heat. Hopefully this will be our last heat wave.
  • GOD’S WORD FOR ALL PEOPLE is Sunday September 13th. Our Goal at the POINT…108 verses which happens to be the number of verses in the book of James.
  • Slidder and Hotdog supper Wednesday night September 16. Originally had this for the 9th but we decided to use the pavilion and so maybe the weather will be cooler by the 16th.
  • Monday October 26…we are hosting the pastor appreciation banquet at the POINT. Things are a little different this year. It will be pastors and executive committee members. I have asks Terri and I am asking our 49ers to help with the meal for the EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. I think we will have between 60-70. It will work if we have a servant’s heart! All 49ers who help are to stay and eat with us.
  • October 28 is our Bill Smith Jambalaya Supper. Pat and Chad are really to go. They will cook the Jambalaya and I am doing hush puppies.
  • We do have one Wednesday night meal in November; it falls on Veterans Day and we are having a stew and Joe is going to have us a video of our veterans at the round table. After the Stew in November, there will be no more Wednesday night suppers until Spring.
  • First Wednesday day service will be November 18 at 10:30
  • We will have a day service on November 25 and lunch but no night service. {Thankgiving Eve}
