Show Me Thy Glory

Moses said, “I pray You, show me Your glory!”
~Exodus 33:18, NASB
All the attributes of God are glorious, yet God glories most in the manifestation of His goodness.
~John Arrowsmith
You read a passage of scripture over and over and you think you know it and then bang, you see something that you have missed. I had this happen just a few days ago. I thought I knew the passage in Exodus where Moses makes the request to see God’s glory but unfortunately, I had not paid attention to God’s answer. The LORD told Moses, “I am not going to show you my glory; I will however, show you My goodness.” I think that most of us would like, or at least we think we would like to see God’s glory but no man has ever seen God’s pure glory other than in the incarnation. There is a great verse in Isaiah 63 that goes along with the passage in Exodus…I will tell of the Lord’s unfailing love. I will praise the Lord for all he has done. I will rejoice in his great goodness to Israel, which he has granted according to his mercy and love. Moses wanted to see God’s glory and God said “No, I will show you my goodness.” WOW!
I am no Moses and I have never had the kind of glorious experiences he had but I have seen the goodness of God. My heart rejoiced within me when this truth hit home…God has shown me His goodness. Perhaps we want more than we can handle? Are we ready to see the glory of God? According to the LORD, His glory can be lethal. He told Moses, “You may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live.” I remember hearing Adrian Rogers tell about the army general who gave him a tour of the underground facility in Colorado. Dr. Rogers was asking question after question as they toured the facility and finally he asks one too many. The general stopped in his tracks and said to Rogers, “I can answer that question for you if you like, but then I will have to kill you because this is classified information.” Dr. Rogers said, “I’m fine not knowing.” As much as I want to see God’s glory; I am not sure that I cannot handle it.
- Bill Southern was moved to room 418 yesterday and was resting when I left there around 1:00. I am headed that way again this morning. Continue to pray for Bill and Carol. It has been a tough month for them.
