The Lord’s Day

I wonder if Charlie Kirk read Lewis Bayly’s PRACTICE OF PIETY. My guess would be that he did not. I like Charlie and his book had a huge impact on my thinking but I did not change my sabbath. My sabbath is still the first day of the week {Sunday}. Charlie had a legitimate reason to go back to Saturday. He simply made it a day of rest. He never stopped attending worship on Sunday which is the LORD’S DAY. Bayly states strongly, “If a person takes lightly the Day of the LORD as a sabbath, they will take every other commandment lightly.” In other words, a person who violated the sabbath of the LORD’s Day {Sunday} will violate the other nine commandments. He has a point: Israel’s back slidding always began with taking the sabbath lightly. Bayly’s conviction was that the sabbath {day of rest/worship} supports all the other commandments. The sabbath did not originate with Moses or Israel, it goes back to creation. The LORD worked six days and rested on the seventh. If the sabbath was not important, it would not be in the Ten Commandments. Rebellion against the sabbath is the acting out of our sinful nature. God designed a seven day system to govern human life and one of those seven days is for rest and worship.

Concerning the LORD’s Day, the Christian Sabbath. Jesus initiated this new sabbath day when He meet with the disciples on Sundays {the day He arose from the grave}. Sunday was the day the church celebrated the glorious resurrection of our LORD. John referred to Sunday as the LORD’s Day and so did the early church. All the early church fathers {Ignatius, Justin Martyr, and Origen} declared Sunday to be the LORD’s Day. The only change I made after reading Charlie Kirks book on the sabbath is start my sabbath at 6:00 pm on Saturday night. This is when the Jewish day begins.

You may not like it or agree, but I think Bayly has a valid point and I can see America’s decline morally moving alongside our disregard for the Sabbath. I see nothing wrong with children playing ball in the yard on Sunday evening but I am totally opposed to organized sports on Sunday. Sunday is the LORD’s Day and it should be repected as such. There will probably be some protest: some will surely say, “But I don’t have a choice!” Oh but you do! The ability to choose is not your problem, a serious lack of conviction is your problem.”

I was in seminary and I needed a job desperately. I had worked for A&P, the grocery store, in high school so I applied and was being interviewed for a job with A&P in New Orleans. Toward the end of the interview, I told the man that I did not work on Sundays. Without hesitation, he ripped my application in half and threw it in the trash can, he never looked up from that point, never spoke another word to me. I assumed the interview was over. I do understand that medical personnel have to work, so do dairy and chicken farmers, the police and the military {and I am sure there are more} but the truth is we have grown lax on practicing the sabbath. We do not treat the day as holy and we will pay dearly.

  • Get braced for our last heat wave. It will last until September 13 according to my app. The good news is it will probably be the last for 2026 and it is not supposed to be as bad as the last one. According to June’s car, it hit 100 yesterday.
  • Don’t forget someone out there needs you to intercede for them today.
  • Outdoor Church this Sunday September @ 8:00. We are sticking with the 8 O’clock start due to the heat.
  • GOD’S WORD FOR ALL PEOPLE is Sunday September 13th. Our Goal at the POINT…108 verses which happens to be the number of verses in the book of James.
  • Slidder and Hotdog supper Wednesday night September 16. Originally had this for the 9th but we decided to use the pavilion and so maybe the weather will be cooler by the 16th.
  • Monday October 26…we are hosting the pastor appreciation banquet at the POINT. Things are a little different this year. It will be pastors and executive committee members. I have asks Terri and I am asking our 49ers to help with the meal for the EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. I think we will have between 60-70. It will work if we have a servant’s heart! All 49ers who help are to stay and eat with us.
  • October 28 is our Bill Smith Jambalaya Supper. Pat and Chad are really to go. They will cook the Jambalaya and I am doing hush puppies.
  • We do have one Wednesday night meal in November; it falls on Veterans Day and we are having a stew and Joe is going to have us a video of our veterans at the round table. After the Stew in November, there will be no more Wednesday night suppers until Spring.
  • First Wednesday day service will be November 18 at 10:30
  • We will have a day service on November 25 and lunch but no night service. {Thankgiving Eve}
