Caiaphas The Prophet

I get amused when I hear some ignorant preacher or want-to-be Bible teacher say, “God can only use a clean vessel.” My first thought is: “I suppose you think you are clean.” These people are enamored with their own self-righteous which they interpret as ‘holiness’. Of course they are mistaken, holiness is saturated with humility and honesty. Folks I have all kinds of biblical proof to contradict this rediculous statement. God uses whomever He chooses, however He chooses, whenever He chooses. He used Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar and He used the evil Caiaphas to prophecy. John 11:51, Caiaphas did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation. How does God do this? The Puritans called in providence. God can use people without their awareness of what He is doing. Caiaphas was prophecying and didn’t know it. He was playing a key role in the redemption on man and was not aware of what he nor God was doing.

Yes, I am aware that he held the highest religious office in the land and that he was an ordained priest, but God’s providence can override any intention or action of man. Caiaphas was a wicked man hiding behind a priestly garment. His father in law was even more wicked. They were ruthless lovers of money and power. Caiaphas nor his father in law annas lost any sleep over the death of Jesus. They were hard and cruel men but God used them to fulfill His purpose. So before you swell up with pride, remember it is God who is directing this play and He uses us to fulfill his redemptive purpose in spite of ourselves. Whatever you do, don’t put limits on what He can do.
