No Entiendo

Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock Him, insult Him and spit on Him; they will flog Him and Hill him. On the third day he will rise again.” These are Jesus’ exact words as He attempts to prepare His disciples for their week in Jerusalem. Read it again, what part in incomprehensible? It is not rocket science. I understand every word so how in the world did they miss it? First of all, I have a huge advantage because hindsight is 20/20 and I am looking back at history. I think their major problem was their prejudices: their preconceived idea of a military messiah was so fixed in their mind; they did not hear anything to the contrary.

The disciples heard Jesus’ words, but they did not truly listen to them. Their minds were so occupied with hopes of an earthly kingdom that they had little room for a suffering Messiah. Their expectations acted like a filter, allowing them to hear only what fit their assumptions. Until God opened their understanding, the truth remained on the other side of that filter. Truth often struggles to enter a mind already crowded with its own conclusions. The disciples were not deaf or dumb, their filters would not allow Jesus unpleasant words enter their minds.

God’s truth is like sunlight streaming through a window. When the blinds are closed, the problem is not with the sun or the light, but with the barrier that keeps the light from entering. The disciples false expectations had drawn the blinds.

We all have filters. Sometimes they are made of fear. Sometimes tradition. Sometimes pride. Sometimes politics. Sometimes past experiences. We tend to hear what confirms what we already believe and unconsciously screen out what challenges us. One of the greatest prayers a Christian can pray is, ‘Lord, open my eyes and open my ears. Help me hear not what I expect You to say, but what You are actually saying.'”
