Good Master

“Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

Durant’s point is that the devil slanders Jesus. He tries to convince us that Christ yoke is made of iron. He has the same attitude and point of view as the wicked servant in Jesus parable of the talents. Not only did this wicked servant not invest his master’s money, he had a dim view of the master himself. The word ‘hard’ in the text above {I knew you were a hard man} means hard, harsh, severe, regid, unyielding. The Greek word is one you will recognize. It is sklēros from which we get the word arteriosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. Basically the wicked servant thought of his master as a scoundral, crook, hard and dishonest man. The devil’s intention, once we commit to Christ, is to sour our perspective of Jesus. He wants to discourage us from following Christ and so he slanders our Master. We must remember that the devil is a liar.

Durants devotion stirred my mind and I began thinking about how untrue the devil’s accusations are: Jesus is not a hard master. He is a good master. Not only does He have infinite foreknowledge to know what lies ahead, He is good, gracious, kind, gentle, patient, merciful and compassionate. On the day of reckoning, the wicked servant tried to blame his master for his laziness, incompetence and slothfulness, but the master was not the problem. The wicked servant and his attitude toward the master was the problem. Jesus is a good Master and He is never the problem.
