Repentance
Let the wicked abandon their ways
and the sinful their schemes.
Let them return to the Lord so that he may have mercy on them,

I love reading the Puritans; especially their prayers. Something about them hits home with me. This is the September 27 entry in Day by Day with the Puritans.
God’s eye is a most piercing eye, and looks into all, even the darkest places. He sees the wickedness that is hidden from others, and not the least suspected by them. He looks into the very heart, and takes notice of all imaginations, desires, affections, and plans that are evil. And as the eye of God is piercing, so it is pure. God sees all iniquity, but does not behold as to approve of any. The wicked are apt to think that God is like them, and because they love their own evil ways, they cannot imagine that God dislikes them. But the wicked, who are called fools, never show themselves so much as fools as when they conclude that God will not be angry about their sin. This foolish unbelief, this false security, this most unworthy apprehension of God stirs up greater indignation.
It reminds me of Paul’s words to the Romans: “But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.” {Romans 2:5, NASB} I also thought of the story of David in his sin of numbering the people. When given the choice between being judged by men and being judged by God, David said…“I am in great distress. Let us now fall into the hand of the LORD for His mercies are great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.” {2 Samuel 24:14, NASB} Every unrepented sin, not under the blood of Christ, is not disappearing into the past—it is being stored up for judgment. Only a fool would refuse to repent. Jesus said, Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. {Luke 13:3} Repent or perish: there are no other options.
