The Untrustworthy Flesh

“Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
~Matthew 26:41, NASB
“The greatest danger is not that we are weak, but that we think we are strong.”
~Theo Pennington
While Jesus was agonizing, sweating drops of blood, over the upcoming shame and humiliation He would endure for our sakes, the disciples slept. When Jesus woke them up, He gave them a stern warning, “Watch out guys, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” There is a ton of truth in those nine words…the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak! Not one of those disciples: Peter, James and John wanted to disappoint Jesus. They had no intention of failing Him and yet they did just that, and failed Him miserably. Jesus told His disciples on the eve of His crucifixion, “Tonight all of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ Peter declared, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you…Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the other disciples vowed the same. We give Peter all the ink, but the other ten said the same thing…”we will never forsake You.”
Did you catch that; all the disciples were in agreement with Peter—we are not going to forsake our LORD, but they did and later felt the shame of their betrayal. The flesh is incredibly strong when it comes to serving itself but it is weak when it comes to doing God’s will. As a matter of fact, the flesh cannot please God at all. Like the disciples, I want to please the LORD. I have no intention of displeasing Him, but like the disciples I have learned the hard way that I cannot please Him unless I depend upon Him completely. The flesh bats 1.000 when it comes to displeasing God. We cannot trust the flesh, it will fail every time.
- I stayed will Bill about an hour yesterday while June was getting registered for her upcoming hip replacement he is very aware of what is going on. It is amazing; he wants no cover. He stays hot all the time. He did take a couple of cat naps while I was there.
