What Is Truth?

~John 18:38, LSB

“Truth is not something we invent; it is something we discover under God.”

~A.W. Tozer

My Thoughts

I do believe that Pontius Pilate was a better man than Caiaphais; but that isn’t saying much. Pilate was a pagan and a skeptic when it came to absolutes. The entire conversation in John 18 goes like this… Jesus said to Pilate, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” Pilate didn’t know all the truth but he did know a portion of truth: he knew that Jesus was not guilty and he knew that the Jews were motivated by envy and hate. In a sense, he was more aware of the truth than the Jewish high court. Like most pagans, Pilate believed that truth is abstract and not absolute. He would fit right in with the secularism humanist of today. The liberals of our day believe that truth is abstract, it cannot always be defined because it evolves and mutates. They believe that what was true in the 18th century is not necessarily true in the 21 century. This is liberal hogwash.

Truth is absolute. Truth is God Himself. Jesus said, “I AM the truth.” Because truth is embedded in the character and nature of God, it has always been. Truth is eternal and absolute. It stands on its own feet. What men think about the truth has no bearing on truth itself. Pilate knew that the Jews were out of line and that what they were doing was unjust, yet he made no effort to go deeper into the truth. All of us are like Pilate in one sense, we can’t possible know all the truth but we can know more. Truth is infinite and we are not, but we can know more and we should have a desire to know more. You see, Jesus is the TRUTH. Whereas I do not believe you can know Him fully, I do believe you can know Him better. Any person who professes to know all there is to know about Jesus {God} is either a liar or a lunatic. What does Psalm 100 say? For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations. The truth cannot change unless the LORD Himself changes and that is not going to happen.

Open my eyes, that I may see

Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;

Place in my hand the wonderful key

That shall unclasp and set me free.

Silently now I wait for Thee,

Ready my God, Thy will to see,

Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit Divine!

In support of the above, check out Ephesians 3:17-19…Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Thank the LORD, the Artic Train has moved through. Seventy-eight degrees on Sunday and snow on Monday. Mrs. June, alias Big Mama, came throught the surgery in flying colors and will be moving to rehab today for 5-7 days before coming home. The kids thinks she will get better care at a facility than I can give her at home and I think they are right. Meanwhile the grand kids are taking care of me. I have more bosses than Carter has liver pills. It doesn’t bother me, I know it means they care. Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes.

We will be back in John 5 tonight at the POINT. We will talk a little about Henry Blackaby and EXPERIENCING GOD and we will put heavy emphasis on the diety of Christ. Jesus is God, this is the foundation of a solid theology. Most of these isms and schisms got started with faulty Christology. I hope you can join us for this discussion.

This blog came from my bible study notes on May 23, 2010. I have been going through some of my old stuff, hoping to throw some of it away. So far, I have trashed very little.

I hope you have a great Wednesday and thanks for reading the blog.
