The Characteristics of A Godly Man

My personal daily bible study is from the Psalms. Yesterday I studies Psalm 112. Although I am reading them in the ESV, I usually read several translations. Yesterday I picked up my little Passion Bible and read Psalm 112 and the Spirit hit my soul like a gentle cool breeze. I was overwhelmed. As soon as I read it and gave thanks, I saw clearly the characteristics of a God fearing person and I want to share that list with you.

  1. He is happy and blessed — v. 1
    His happiness grows out of a right relationship with Christ.
  2. He delights in God’s Word — v. 1
    He doesn’t merely read and obey God’s commands; he delights in them.
  3. His faith influences the next generation — v. 2
    His godliness leaves a legacy.
  4. His wealth becomes a blessing to others — v. 3
    What God puts into his hands does not terminate with him.
  5. He shines in the darkness — v. 4
    Darkness does not extinguish his light. In fact, darkness makes his light more noticeable.
  6. He becomes increasingly God-like in character — v. 4
    He becomes “gracious, compassionate, and righteous”—the very qualities attributed to God in Psalm 111:4.
  7. He is a man of integrity — v. 5
    He “conducts his business fairly.” His Christianity affects the way he handles money, business, promises, and people.
  8. He is spiritually stable and secure — v. 6
    “He will never be shaken.” Storms may shake him, but they cannot uproot him.
  9. He does not live in fear of difficult days — vv. 7–8
    He knows that bad news is coming…difficult days are ahead…but he isn’t going to allow fear to control him. His heart is steady because his trust is settled.
  10. He triumphs over his enemies — v. 8 The Psalmist is probably referring to actual flesh and blood enemies but when I think of enemies, I think of the world, Satan and the flesh. Regarding the flesh, I think of pride, lust, envy, greed, fear, vanity. These are the ones that give me fits.
  11. He is generous — v. 9
    “He distributes freely; he gives to the poor.” Generosity isn’t something he occasionally does; it is part of who he has become.
  12. He is the opposite of the wicked man — v. 10
    The two men are traveling in opposite directions because their hearts are oriented toward different things.

I hope you don’t misunderstand what I am about to say. When I talk about my personal wealth, I am not talking about money. Most of you have more money than I do and you can do things I can’t do. Trust me, I am not envious, well, maybe a little: there are some things I would like to have BUT I would not trade the wealth I have for them. Rarely, matter of fact, I cannot remember a Sunday, do we sit down for Sunday dinner without at least one guest and sometimes a half-dozen joining us. I have to admit, I have little or nothing to do with it. Ty’s friend JT ate with us last Sunday. We like it when JT joins us: he is a worker. He takes out the garbage. Either one of the children or grandchildren invite someone to join us every Sunday. Big Mama and the girls never know how many to prepare for but they don’t complain. It is something we treasure.

  • Cool again this morning, PTL. According to my weather app we do have heat coming the first week of September but I knew we would have one or two more heat waves before fall. Hope keeps me going!
  • June and I had a wonderful anniversary and we want to thank you for all the cards, letters, text and gifts. We feel extremely blessed and very grateful to have so many wonderful friends. It is overwhelming.

  • Outdoor Church Sunday September 6 @ 8:00. We are holding to the 8:00 am due to the heat
  • GOD’S WORD FOR ALL PEOPLE is Sunday September 13th. Our Goal at the POINT…108 verses which happens to be the number of verses in the book of James. I got another text this week from a member who is loving our study in James.
  • Slidder and Hotdog supper Wednesday night September 16. Originally had this for the 9th but we decided to use the pavilion and so maybe the weather will be cooler by the 16th.
  • Monday October 26…we are hosting the pastor appreciation banquet at the POINT. Things are a little different this year. It will be pastors and executive committee members. I have asks Terri and I am asking our 49ers to help with the meal for the EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. I think we will have between 60-70. It will work if we have a servant’s heart!
  • October 28 is our Bill Smith Jambalaya Supper. Pat does the cooking that night: all you have to do is show up and eat.
  • Our November Wednesday night meal falls on Veterans Day and we are having a stew and Joe is going to have us a video of our veterans at the round table. After the Stew in November, there will be no more Wednesday night suppers until Spring.
  • First Wednesday day service will be November 18 at 10:30
